Summer is here in Bergen County, NJ, and that means homeowners are rightfully focused on their air conditioning systems. But it also makes the perfect time to prepare for the coming winter by upgrading or replacing your existing heating system. Among the options to consider is a radiant heating system, which installs coils beneath your floorboards to warm the room directly through the floor instead of warming the air like many heating systems do. It takes a lot of time and effort to install but the results are invariably worth it. “Why should I install radiant floor heating?” you ask. The answers are very illuminating.

COMFORT

Radiant heating coils send heat up through the floorboard into your feet and other furnishings in the home. The coils can be warmed gradually by electrical power, or by circulating warm water through tubes depending on the kind of system you‘re interested in. This kind of slow, gradual heat is much more comfortable that forced air heating, which depends on air flow and can be subjected to unpleasant drafts and cold spots. Furthermore because the floor is the source of the heat, you won’t have to worry about cold floors when you wake up in the morning.

EFFICIENCY

But the biggest benefit comes with the bottom line. Though they cost more to install than other systems, radiant floor heating systems use much less energy, and they don’t lose a lot of heating power by blowing so much of it through the air. That makes them considerably less expensive to operate, which will save you a great deal of money over time: easing your monthly budget crunch and helping to offset the cost of installation.

Spring has finally arrived, and with it, residents of Bergen County, NJ are beginning to enjoy the prospect of balmy weather once again. Many homeowners are looking forward to summer and taking steps to repair and maintain their air conditioners. However, that doesn’t mean you should just leave your heater alone until next winter. Now is the ideal time to perform maintenance and repairs on your heating unit, to ensure that it’s ready to go when the temperatures start to drop. Here are a few spring tips for your heater.

Schedule a Maintenance Session as Soon as Possible

A maintenance session isn’t the same as a repair session. Rather, it’s a sort of tune up designed to increase the heater’s efficiency and identify potentially big problems while they’re still small. The technician gives the unit a thorough inspection, tightens loose bolts and fittings, replaces filters and screens, and otherwise ensures that your heater is ready to go well before the temperatures dip down again.

Check for Larger Problems

While a qualified professional can (and should) pinpoint the exact cause of a larger problem, you can perform a basic check on your heater to see if such problems may be present. The easiest way is to turn on your heater and listen for any usual noises such as grinding or ticking: anything you don’t normally hear when running your heater. You can also check for any obvious signs of damage on the outside of the heater, or spots where a screw or seal might have come loose.

Consider an Oil to Gas Conversion

Many New Jersey residents still use oil-based heaters to stay warm in the winter. The arrival of spring means that you can replace that older technology with a new natural gas heater. Gas heaters are smaller, less expensive and more efficient than oil-based heaters, and the warm weather gives you the time to schedule an installation when you wish, instead of rushing around to complete installation before fall turns into winter.

Have you started to notice that your heating system isn’t performing quite as it should be? It isn’t unusual for heating systems to develop problems mid-winter, especially if they haven’t been maintained in a while. However, it can sometimes be difficult to see that a problem may have developed because your system is still operational. To help you better determine if your system has a problem, here are some warning signs to be aware of should your heating system in Paramus need repair:

Low Volume of Heat

There can be a few reasons why your home isn’t getting the volume of warm air it should be. One of the most common is a dirty air filter. Dirty air filters can become so clogged that they restrict the air flow in your system, which can reduce the volume of air flowing through your system. Another common problem that can cause low air flow is the blower. The fan in your system is responsible for pushing the warm air through your ductwork and into your living spaces, and if something is wrong with yours, you may not get the amount of air you need.

Strange Sounds or Odors

There are normal operational sounds associated with any heating system, but sounds like bangs, screeches, loud clicking, etc., do not fall into the “normal” category. The same goes for odors: your heating system shouldn’t ever have an overpowering smell of any kind. If it does, it’s time to call for a specialist.

High Energy Bills

If you haven’t changed how you heat your home, but you are suddenly seeing some very large energy bills, it’s likely a problem has developed with your system. Why? Because a high energy bill indicates that your system is suddenly using much more energy to operate, and this is likely due to a problem in the system.

Repair issues do not disappear on their own, and typically become worse with time.

Boilers aren’t one-size-fits-all appliances. Like other heating systems, it is necessary to take a few steps in order to ensure that you are installing a heating system that will fit your needs and the needs of your home. To make your Hillsdale boiler installation a success, here are some suggestions from our installation experts here at BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc.:

Determine Your Fuel Types

There are two main types of fuel that boilers use: oil or natural gas; they can also use propane and solid fuels, but these aren’t as mainstream as oil or gas. If you are replacing an existing system, you may want to stay with your current fuel, but one of the benefits of new installation is the opportunity to explore your options. Once you determine which fuel you’d like to use for your boiler, it’s time to look at sizing.

Sizing

Many times you’ll hear that all you need to know when installing a new boiler is the square footage of your home; this is not accurate. To properly calculate heat load, you need to consider the following items:

  • Your home’s orientation
  • Daytime heat gain
  • Insulation levels
  • Types and number of windows and doors
  • Floor plan
  • Number of rooms
  • Number of occupants
  • Square footage

Doing a proper and correct heat load calculation helps ensure that you’ll install a heatingsystem that is the right size for your home.

Work with an Expert

Working with an expert from the very start of your process to the finish is one of the best ways to make sure you install a system that fits with your home, meets your needs and will last for the long-term. Not only can an expert help you with the heat load calculation, he or she can explain to you all of the options available with using a boiler, including outlet types, and can help advise you on energy efficiency levels and what they can mean for your home. Lastly, he or she will install your new boiler correctly the first time around.

If you are in need of a new boiler installation in Hillsdale, call the experts you can count on: BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc.

This is honestly a pretty difficult question to answer, mainly because it almost entirely depends on the state of your home’s heating infrastructure when the installation begins. If you had a boiler as your previous heating system, then it’s safe to say that most of the required parts are already in place. If you didn’t have a boiler before installing the new one, then it could take up to several days to get everything acquired and installed. Let’s take a look at some of the parts that may increase installation time if you don’t have them.

WATER PIPES

If you’re installing a boiler, then you are likely going to be using a radiant heating system for your home. Radiant heating systems rely on water pipes to distribute heat throughout the house. These pipes are usually installed in either the subfloor or the walls of each room. As you might imagine, this requires quite a bit of work unless you’re building a brand new house or remodeling an old one. The walls or floor will need to be torn up to allow the new water pipes to be installed. This can add as much as a week or two to the installation of your boiler system, depending on how many rooms you want heated.

FUEL

Again, this may not be a problem if your new system uses the same fuel source as your old one. If not, though, modifications will have to be made. This is especially true with natural gas lines, which need to be connected from outside the house. Usually, installing an entirely new line should be done in less than a day. That depends on your circumstances, though.

VENTING

Proper venting is vitally important for both the boiler’s safety and yours. Most heating systemsrequire venting, so you probably already have the proper flue or chimney. If you used something like a heat pump before, though, you may need to have a flue installed for your new boiler.
